A Pensioner Writes
Y0u may recall that not long ago I was involved in an exchange with those two grand gentlemen of letters, Wilf Turnbull and Derek Philpott, who write to various pop songsmiths to point out the anomalies in their lyrics. For example… Dear Mr. Costello, Re: Everyday I Write the Book I am perplexed my bespectacled friend. Either one is to assume that you pen a tome every twenty-four hours, or you have been working on the … Continue reading

They might not be the first ones that come to mind and they might not be as popular as their band’s guitarist or vocalist but bassists are important to any band. Some double as singers and many contribute greatly to the creative process as songwriters. Bass plays a much larger role in rock than people may realize. It may not stand out as much as the drums, guitars or vocals … Continue reading

A reply to Derek Philpott and Wilf Turnbull
I’ve just had a communication from that gentleman of letters Derek Philpott and his cohort, Mr Wilf Turnbull, who not long ago wrote to ‘Elvis Costello and the Attractions’ regarding anomalies they’d found in some of band’s recorded works. Having failed to elicit a response from the song smith concerned, I have stepped in to try and help. Our respective letters may be viewed here at Mr Turnbull’s site … though I fear many wormholes may yet be found in … Continue reading

What’s the Score?
I’m away for a week to Wales, so here’s a collectors’ item to keep you going. This is when the Quiver and Humble Pie boys met the Pink Floyd for a game of soccerball. Willie Wilson, Quiver’s drummer on the left, me, and Roger Waters and Nick Mason. Others there were Jimmy McCulloch and Steve Marriott. My friend, the noted wit and bon viveur John Hughes, asked if it might not more accurately be designated as a game of ‘Spot … Continue reading
