{"id":1718,"date":"2012-02-26T11:43:59","date_gmt":"2012-02-26T11:43:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.brucethomas.co.uk\/?p=1718"},"modified":"2012-02-26T23:10:46","modified_gmt":"2012-02-26T23:10:46","slug":"seeing-is-believing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.brucethomas.co.uk\/?p=1718","title":{"rendered":"Seeing is Believing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brucethomas.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/TP3.3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1719\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brucethomas.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/TP3.3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"133\" \/><\/a>Do\u00a0you see the triangle that\u2019s not actually there?\u00a0\u00a0You see it because your mind fills it in to create something familiar.\u00a0 In fact, it\u2019s harder to un-see the triangle.<\/p>\n<p>But at other times we can fail to see something that <em>really<\/em> <em>is<\/em> there, even something truly\u00a0remarkable \u2014 as the following story reveals &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>One cold January morning in 2007, for about forty-five minutes, in a Washington DC metro station, a man played a violin. \u00a0During that time, around two thousand people went through the station, most of them on their way to work.<\/p>\n<p>After about three minutes, a middle-aged man noticed that there was a musician playing.\u00a0 He slowed his pace and stopped for a few seconds, and then he hurried on to meet his schedule. Four minutes later, the violinist received his first dollar as a woman threw money in the hat and walked on without stopping.\u00a0 For a moment a young man leaned against the wall to listen to him, then looked at his watch and started to walk again.<\/p>\n<p>After the man had been playing the violin for ten minutes, a three-year old boy stopped, but his mother tugged him along hurriedly. \u00a0The boy stopped to look at the violinist again, but the mother pushed hard and the child continued to walk, turning his head the whole time.\u00a0 This action was repeated by several other children, but every parent, without exception, forced their child to move on quickly.<\/p>\n<p>After forty-five minutes of continuous playing, only six people had stopped and listened for a short while. About twenty gave and the man collected a total of $32.\u00a0 The man finished playing and silence took over.\u00a0 No-one noticed and no-one applauded. \u00a0There was no recognition at all.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.brucethomas.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Joshua-Bell-adamjustice.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-1720\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.brucethomas.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Joshua-Bell-adamjustice.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"207\" \/><\/a>No-one knew the violinist was Joshua Bell, one of the foremost musicians in the world, playing some of the most intricate pieces of violin music ever written, on a violin worth $3.5 million dollars.\u00a0 Two days before, Joshua Bell had sold out a theatre in Boston, where the seats averaged $100 each, for the audience to sit and listen to him play exactly the same music.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A man\u2019 playing violin incognito in a D.C. metro station was organized by the <em>Washington Post<\/em> as part of a social experiment about perception and habit.<\/p>\n<p>[Extract from my upcoming book <em>Another Roll of the Dice.<\/em>]<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Do\u00a0you see the triangle that\u2019s not actually there?\u00a0\u00a0You see it because your mind fills it in to create something familiar.\u00a0 In fact, it\u2019s harder to un-see the triangle.
