I’ve just had a communication from that gentleman of letters Derek Philpott and his cohort, Mr Wilf Turnbull, who not long ago wrote to ‘Elvis Costello and the Attractions’ regarding anomalies they’d found in some of band’s recorded works. Having failed to elicit a response from the song smith concerned, I have stepped in to try and help. Our respective letters may be viewed here at Mr Turnbull’s site … though I fear many wormholes may yet be found in my Victorian analogy.

“Wormholes” – I see what you did there!
I particularly liked the attention to detail and … diagrams! I read Flatland many, many moons ago – so yes, your reply tickled my fancy.
Thanks for your comment — Carl Sagan did a good piece on Flatland many moons ago, and there’s a section on it in the movie “What the Bleep Do We Know”. It’s 150 years old now, but still as good an analogy as you’ll find anywhere.
Don’t know if you saw this…another wonderful US media moment.

Yep — that’s a cracker Mike. There’s dumb and … er, dumber.
Her name is Krystal Ball….she should have seen this coming. Nicked that one, I confess.
Obviously her real name.
Her husband’s name is probably Claude.
Ah! The, infamous “Captain Janks”. Captain Janks is a longtime prank caller associated with The Howard Stern satellite show from his terrestrial radio days and on Sirius satellite radio.
Most of his calls can be found on YouTube, due to faithful fans posting them there. He has explained how he gets producers in a rush to be first with the news on-air to allow him on simply by declaring himself some anonymous authority figure and tossing in a few realistic sounding details easily found on the internet.
His own personal love life and other travails are chronicled as well, from his appearances on the radio program. On his last apperance he came out as gay and announced his “retirement” from prank calling, though many listeners believe this to be yet another goof on everyone, as he has since made numerous other nationally televised prank calls.
Definitely recommend a listen. It’s incredible how clueless many of these news presenters are. They’re not even listening to what he says half the time.
Well, Germany….at least it was in the neighborhood.
At the end of the day Germany were the best team in the tournament and deserved the trophy. There’s been a lot of good games, including Belgium v USA, and a lot of attacking football and high scores. It’s goiong to take the Brazilians some time to get over it all though. I’m pleased that van Gaal got Holland to 3rd and await his arrival at Man Utd next week 🙂
Wondering if any of the Brazil players have suddenly “disappeared”. I have heard they take their soccer pretty seriously.
It’s happened before — when the US beat Columbia some years ago the Columbian player who scored the “own goal” was shot on his return home. I wouldn’t fancy being David Luiz at the moment. I bet Paris Saint Germain are pleased they just spent £40 mill on him.
What a fun read! Brilliant inquiry and response. Thanks for sharing, Bruce. 🙂
I was relieved to see you weren’t referring to my own biog, “Flathead”.
On the strength of Mr Thomas’s erudite response, I have bought myself a copy of Flatland (suitably, a flat kindle edition) to read. 🙂
It will no doubt elevate your thinking.
I think that on this occasion we may have met our match
As ever, your modesty and generosity of spirit does you credit.
Bless You Sir
